DRESS A CHILD CAMPAIGN TO BENEFIT OVER 3000 CHILDREN FROM POOR FAMILIES.

Over 3000 children from families living under abject poverty acre set to benefit from a 'Dress a child project', designed to encourage learning to all children of school going age, within Umzumbe Municipality.

The project aims to identify and provide all children from needy families with full school uniform, and further facilitate their access to government's poverty alleviation programmes, such as, social grants, child support grants, foster care grants, etc.

This year, Umzumbe Municipality, has put together an intersectoral team, which comprise, officials from the Department of Home Affairs, Social Development, SASSA, Department of Health, Education, Agriculture and love Life. This team will conduct a comprehensive assessment on the needs of all identified children and recommend, within their scope, poverty relief interventions. The municipality will then provide support and school uniforms to all identified children.

This project is implemented in conjunction with the "Premier's Cluster Flagship Programme", which has been implemented in three wards with the highest rate of poverty in Umzumbe. A list of eligible families from the Premier’s Flagship programme has been integrated with the main list of potential beneficiaries for the "Dress a child project" ,which essentially means that all children from families identified through the Premiers Flagship Programme will automatically benefit from this project.

From the 22nd to 26th March 2010, a team of highly skilled officials from the above mentioned government departments and NGOs, led by His worship the Mayor of Umzumbe Municipality, Cllr S.T.Gumede, will visit schools to handover uniforms to all 3000 identified needy children and also provide comprehensive government services through a "one stop shop approach" .

The schools will be grouped according to clusters and all four clusters will be visited during the 4th Week of March 2010
